You send the same design to three different manufacturers. You expect three similar numbers back. Instead, you get three numbers that don’t seem to agree on anything. It feels like someone is guessing, or worse, that someone is overcharging you.

Most of the time, nobody is doing anything wrong. A t-shirt price isn’t one number — it’s built from several separate ingredients, and every factory weighs those ingredients a little differently. Once you know what’s actually in the price, comparing quotes gets a lot easier, and so does knowing which parts you can actually change if you want the number to come down.

The fabric decides more than most people expect

Not all cotton is the same cotton. Fabric is priced by what it’s made of (100% cotton, a cotton blend, or a performance fabric that pulls moisture away from the skin) and by its weight, which the industry measures in GSM — grams per square meter. A light summer tee and a heavy fleece hoodie aren’t just “different garments.” They’re different amounts of raw material, and raw material is priced by the kilogram at the mill, long before it reaches a sewing machine.
